Gault&Millau's review 2026
Selected
Salo started as a hybrid of a bakery and a specialty coffee shop, and then evolved into an original daily bistro that offers very tasty meals for an early lunch. In addition to the all-day menu, which includes their popular štrukli, soparnik and salenjaci by Petra Jelenić (the pastry chef who founded Salo with chef Tvrtko Šakota and entrepreneur Matija Powlison Belković), from 10.30 am to 4 pm you can order dishes from the brunch menu - white bean hummus, chicken soup à la ramen (with marinated eggs and ramen noodles that they make themselves), gazpacho made of several types of tomatoes and homemade mascarpone, stuffed zucchini, sweet štrukli à la Suzette (with whey caramel)... The most expensive (and probably the most filling) on that list is the burger made of aged beef, a 200-gram burger with beetroot tartare, spicy kimchi and cream sauce and seasonal greens. Salo is located above Dolac, on the corner of Skalinska Street and Opatovina, and it is simply decorated: tables and chairs are made of light, natural wood, and so are the shelves with jars full of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, there are also bags of flour... However, all this is not there for decoration, but to be used in the kitchen. At the bar, they prepare various types of Cogito coffee and homemade herbal teas, they also make an original nettle latte, and there are also several types of natural wines on offer. There are no reservations in Salo, and since it is usually crowded at lunchtime, you have to wait a bit for the table.
