Gault&Millau's review 2026

Šug is located in the very centre of Split, right next to the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, and has been a favourite spot for local guests for years. It is open the year-round, and in the summer it is also visited by tourists looking for authentic Dalmatian cuisine. The space is small, modern and unobtrusive, with a pleasant outdoor terrace. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The kitchen is run by two chefs with a clear vision, Duje Kanajet (Gault&Millau Croatia Young Talent Trophy 2018) and Mateo Kordić. The menu relies on tradition, but the execution is contemporary and precise. The emphasis is on seasonal and local ingredients that change daily. They offer brunches on a spoon, such as stews and slow-cooked dishes. Rich tećade (food braised in a pot, that in Dalmatian dialect is called teća), full of quality ingredients and carefully balanced spices, occupy a special place. The fish comes fresh and baked just right, with an emphasis on clean texture and juiciness. Meat lovers can count on specialties such as beefsteak or rib eye steak, duck breast and pašticada (the braised beef), as well as veal risotto. The dessert menu is modest, but good and often inspired by local cuisine. The presentation is neat and contemporary without being over the top. The wine list is based mainly on local labels, and some wines can also be ordered by the glass. Šug is an informal restaurant with very good food and a warm atmosphere, ideal for a casual meal in the city centre. The personnel are friendly and relaxed, the prices are reasonable, and table reservations are mandatory.
