The restaurant Tajer on Zvonimirova Street fosters a clear philosophy of the Croatian continental cuisine, with an emphasis on the classic and authentic flavours of the Northern region of Međimurje. Easily accessible and pleasant to stay with a rustic-elegant interior, it is an ideal choice for those looking for serious domestic gastronomy, whether for a family gathering or a business lunch. During the week, they also have a daily offer of gablec (brunch) at very affordable prices. The menu relies on a strong continental identity: from homemade soups and štrukli (savoury pastry dough filled with cheese boiled or baked) to rich meat dishes and handmade side dishes such as mlinci (pieces of flat bread dough boiled and seasoned with roasted meat jus) or gnocchi. We tasted an excellent venison pâté served with their homemade bread. It is especially worth highlighting the restaurant’s consistency in the way they prepare the classic recipes. Here the traditional duck with mlinci that we ordered gained a new dimension. Finally, don’t miss the dessert, the Međimurje gibanica (the traditional pastry with four distinct fillings: poppy seed, fresh cow’s cheese, walnuts, and apples—sandwiched between thin layers of dough). The pumpkin ice cream that you can order with it provides an interesting, modern contrast. The wine list is extensive and carefully composed, with a large selection of wines by the glass, which further elevates the experience and allows the guests to try something new with their pairing. It is wise to make a reservation regardless of the time of arrival, as this restaurant regularly attracts an audience eager for authentic continental cuisine.
