The very name of this authentic Split tavern in the old town, inside Diocletian’s Palace, suggests what is on offer there. The word “spiza” in Dalmatian simply means food, and that is exactly what you get here - quality, homemade dishes made from seasonal ingredients that have been used in the Mediterranean since ancient times. Since ingredients are purchased on a daily basis, at the market and fish market, the menu is created depending on what is available that day. However, it always includes traditional Dalmatian dishes - grilled fish or in aromatic gregada (light fish stew), black risotto, homemade pasta with seafood or mushrooms, but also meat dishes such as veal liver, lamb with peas or wild boar with homemade gnocchi. The ambiance of Villa Spiza is also authentic and relaxed - a small space with an open kitchen, where you can feel the spirit of old Split. Especially when a guest stops by just for a glass of wine, chats with the hosts and announces their imminent arrival with company. Villa Spiza is run by Ivana Gamulin, daughter of the legendary Split chef Nikica Gamulin Gama, and her sister Nada is in charge of desserts. The wine list is not extensive, dominated by Dalmatian wines, most of which can be ordered by the glass.
