Gault&Millau's review 2026

Vinodol is an unmissable address on the Zagreb gastronomic scene. Located in the very centre, in a row of restaurants on the pedestrian Teslina Street, although it is the largest, Vinodol is almost always full, and on weekends you can’t get a seat without a reservation. It has a smaller terrace on the street, but the interior, which consists of a large covered courtyard and an equally large, beautifully decorated hall, can accommodate more than 200 people. The restaurant, which has been around for sixty years, was known for its traditional local dishes. It has partially preserved that heritage and today it still offers classic dishes such as beef soup with semolina dumplings, Zagorje štrukli (savoury dough filled with cottage cheese, eggs and cream), small pasta with cabbage, roasted suckling pig or roasted lamb. But what make Vinodol special are the innovative and creative dishes of the weekly menus, served in a fine-dining style. It is simply incredible that a kitchen that has to serve so many plates manages to change the entire menu in seven days, which is always dedicated to seasonal, local ingredients. In the fall, we tasted an excellent cream of porcini soup, with a velvety consistency and intense flavour. We were delighted by the tarte of fresh porcini, on a base of soft cheese and short crust pastry. The delicate trout in a hazelnut crust was served on a cauliflower cream. Along with the wild deer goulash, with a thick sauce full of flavours, they plated up crispy balls of Roman gnocchi and a gremolata of finely chopped fennel and orange, which gave the dish an extraordinary freshness. At the end, we tasted the vanilla cream with apples and crispy pastry, a fine deconstruction of apple strudel. Vinodol has an extensive wine list, but with the weekly menu, they always offer, by the glass, the wines from one of the leading Croatian winemakers at a promotional price. The numerous staff is friendly and professional and pays attention to each guest regardless of the crowd.
