Gault&Millau's review 2026

Located in a side street near the Apoxyomenos Museum, Restaurant Za Kantuni offers a pleasant escape from the summer crowds. On sunny days, the shaded terrace accommodates just over 100 guests, while the indoor space holds about half as many. The restaurant is open year-round. The ambiance reflects relaxed Mediterranean style; stone and wood interior with details and memorabilia of the restaurant’s history. The staff is welcoming, the menu fairly extensive featuring both fish and meat dishes typical of island cuisine. Daily they prepare fresh fish and shellfish as well as lamb and game from the nearby island of Cres, and a variety of ingredients from Kvarner and Istria. The cuisine is largely inspired by seasonal ingredients. Spring highlights include octopus and asparagus, which can be enjoyed in soups, rich salads, or risottos with or without prawns. Autumn, on the other hand, is marked by porcini mushrooms prepared in various combinations. A particularly tasty dish is sea bass fillet served on fennel purée. For a main meat course, duck breast with porcini mushrooms and sweet potato purée is recommended. Game lovers will appreciate their excellent wild boar goulash (žgvacet) served with polenta. All dishes are enhanced with wild island herbs, giving them a distinctive aroma. For dessert, we recommend strudel with dried figs and orange, or a tart made from Lošinj lemons. The wine list is dominated by labels from Istrian and Kvarner winemakers, offering a good price-quality ratio.
