Winery presentation by Gault&Millau

Along the road leading from the center of Ilok to the Principovac estate stands the premium boutique winery of Katarina and Stjepan Kovčalija. Its modern architecture and a giant wine glass at the entrance make it impossible to miss. The brother and sister, members of the renowned Kovčalija hospitality family (owners of Hotel Dunav), built the winery with support from European funds, while its design was created by Belgrade-based architect Saša Panić. Particularly striking is the cellar, divided into four sections that reflect the layered history of Ilok’s winemaking tradition. The first, representing the present day, features stainless steel tanks. The second evokes the Austro-Hungarian period, where wines are stored in concrete vessels. The third section, with wooden barrels, recalls medieval winemaking, while the fourth showcases terracotta amphorae in the style of ancient times. On the first floor, a spacious tasting room for up to 120 guests offers the opportunity to sample and purchase their Frankovka, Graševina, and Chardonnay. The winery produces around 50,000 bottles annually, and their Frankovka was awarded a silver medal at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards in London.
